Charted worlds and the surface pool

Choose a destination you can reach and survive. Charted worlds offer known starting points, while procedural land is bound to a limited supply of saved surfaces.

Beyond the Overworld 0.0.1-p0Java 1.21.1NeoForge

These guides describe the October 23, 2026 development version. The older download with the same version number is missing later features.

Planets and dimensions are different records

Space is one dimension. An 8,192-block X/Z sector has a 0.62 candidate-system chance before overlap rejection; qualifying systems have two to seven planets. Rogues can exist outside systems. This is not a guarantee that 62% of sectors contain a final system.

There are 11 legacy non-home surfaces and 32 free procedural surface dimensions: 8 shallow, 11 normal, 5 deep, 5 tall and 3 extreme. First landing binds a procedural world to a slot; slots never recycle. A nearest available height class can be used. Once all 32 are occupied, another procedural surface landing is refused, preserving established bases. Logical IDs, names and seed traits are separate from storage dimensions.

Each planet keeps its own sleep and time state. Fixed-sky worlds have zero day length, rather than a zero-minute repeating day.

Terrain and locks

Biome definitions are not planet counts: the report lists 95 biome JSONs. There are Classic plus 13 other base terrain archetypes and 15 extremities, with eligibility checks. Gas giants require Large planets and tall forms require sufficient height; charted worlds keep base archetypes. Older generated land keeps its terrain lock unless explicitly changed, avoiding silent regeneration.

Tidal Split supplies spatial day/night variation; a positionless tidal calculation uses noon. Gas giants add depth-related skies, fog and hazards. Space spans Y=-1024 through 1023, within a constrained usable flight region. Ordinary planets orbit tilted planes while administrator custom planets use fixed positions.

See biomes and resources, terrain archetypes and dimension definitions for the countable catalogs (discovery-sensitive).
