Smoking, alcohol and tolerance

Smoking and drinking change your survivor’s condition. Check the costs and recovery rules before treating either as relief without consequences.

Actual and felt alcohol units

An example at the 40% tolerance cap: five actual units feel like three, but cost 20 hydration and still count toward hangover. This describes a fictional game mechanic.

Nicotine

Smoking requires ignition and can fail when too soaked. Smoker refunds two creation points and starts a dependency that lasts for that survivor’s life. Repeated smoking can also create a habit without the trait.

StateReported effect, survival time
CravingFour hours after a smoke, three with Smoker; hooked survivors gain 3 stress/hour
WithdrawalFrom 12 hours: +2 unhappiness/hour, +1 boredom/hour and timed actions ×1.10
GumSuppresses symptoms for six hours
QuittingWithout Smoker, dependency can end 72 hours after the last smoke; the trait prevents this

Alcohol

Each actual unit costs four hydration. Felt-unit thresholds are Tipsy 2, Drunk 4, Very Drunk 6 and Blackout 8. Reported infected-melee miss chances are 5%/15%/30%, with firearm spread ×1.1/×1.25/×1.5. Drunk states can slow movement; camera sway follows distortion-effects settings.

Blackout leaves the survivor helpless for 30 real seconds and adds 20 fatigue on waking. After a peak of at least four actual units, hangover lasts six survival hours, eight after blackout. One painkiller can halve the remainder; more alcohol postpones it while present.

Tolerance is not immunity

After an episode clears, tolerance gains one percentage point per unit, up to 40%, then fades two points per survival day. felt units = blood units × (1 − tolerance). Hydration costs and hangover still follow actual units, so a less intense status does not erase those costs.

Death resets survivor-specific vice state; tolerance is not a permanent account upgrade. Original vice sounds exist in the inspected implementation according to the report, but no sound audition was performed here.
